AI image colour mismatch on clothing usually starts in your garment photo, where warm bulbs or cold LEDs tint the cloth. Reshoot in diffuse daylight with no flash, use a neutral background for the listing shot, check on two screens, and recreate any shot that is still off.
Colour is one of the first things a buyer complains about when a parcel arrives. The saree in the photo was wine and the one at home looks brown. Our returns post covers why that costs money. This one is about why the colours drift in AI images and what you control.
AI image colour mismatch cause 1: White balance in your photo
A phone camera guesses the colour of the light and corrects for it. Under yellow bulbs or cold LED tubes it often guesses wrong. The photo then carries a tint, and the studio faithfully reproduces the cloth as photographed.
Fix: shoot in diffuse, indirect daylight, near an open window or in shade, with no flash and no filter. Put a plain white sheet behind the garment so the camera has a neutral reference.
Cause 2: Light in the scene changes how colour reads
Even with a correct garment photo, the generated scene has its own light. A warm evening set will warm the cloth; a cool studio set will cool it. Deep reds, maroons and mustard shift most.
Fix: for the hero listing shot, choose a neutral, soft background in Catalogue Studio. Save warm or dramatic sets for lifestyle frames and label them as such.
Cause 3: Screens and colour profiles
A phone in vivid mode, a laptop with a different colour profile and a marketplace app that recompresses the image can all show the same file in different colours. If you compare the AI photo on one screen with the cloth in your hand, you are comparing screen to cloth.
Fix: compare on the cloth itself in daylight, on a screen with vivid or night modes off, and check the same file on a second device before you judge it.
Cause 4: One render drifted
Sometimes a single render is simply off, even with good input. Recreate it. On a Standard order each shot has 1 free Recreate. If a paid shot still misses on colour fidelity, you can ask for half your credits back from the Orders tab.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Everything tinted yellow or blue | White balance in the photo | Reshoot in diffuse daylight, no flash |
| Reds and mustards shift in some shots | Scene light | Neutral background for the listing shot |
| Looks right on one phone, wrong on another | Screen and profile | Judge against the cloth in daylight on two devices |
| One shot off, others fine | Drift in one render | Recreate that shot |
AI image colour mismatch: a checklist before you publish
- Photo taken in diffuse daylight with no flash and no filter
- A plain white or neutral backdrop in the garment photo
- Hero shot uses a neutral background; warm sets kept for lifestyle
- Checked on the real cloth in daylight, not just on a screen
- Checked on two devices with vivid or night modes off
- Off-colour shots recreated, not published
- Colour named in the listing text, such as “wine red”, so the words support the picture
Why does the colour in my AI photo not match my garment?
Most often the light in your upload tinted the cloth. Screens and the scene's own light can add to it. Reshoot in daylight first, then Recreate any shot that is still off.
Can I fix colour after the image is made?
You can edit any image in an editor you trust, but then the picture no longer comes straight from the studio. We would reshoot the garment photo and re-run the shot.
Do I get credits back for a colour miss?
You can ask for half your credits back from the Orders tab on a paid shot. A review team inspects the input, so a clear daylight photo helps your case.
Is it better to describe the colour in the listing?
Yes. A named colour next to an accurate photo reduces surprises and it costs nothing.
Why does my red or maroon saree look brown in the AI photo?
Deep reds shift most under warm light. Reshoot in diffuse daylight, use a neutral listing background, and compare against the cloth in daylight on two screens.
Disclosure: Vastralook is our own product. No AI tool can guarantee a perfect colour match, so always check the final image against the real garment before listing.
