Is ChatGPT enough for product photography? For a single concept image, often yes. For a clothing catalogue, where the garment must match yours, the model must repeat and the sizes must fit a marketplace, a dedicated studio gives more control. Test one real garment in both before you decide.
The question we hear most from sellers is: why pay for a fashion studio when ChatGPT or Gemini can make a picture of a woman in a saree? It is a fair question and the answer is not “because chatbots are bad”. They are good at pictures. The gap is in everything around the single picture.
1. ChatGPT for product photography: when a chatbot is enough
- A mood board, a lookbook idea or a campaign concept where the garment does not have to be exact.
- A single social post where one nice image is the goal.
- Early experiments, because Gemini lists image generation on its free plan.
2. Where ChatGPT and Gemini struggle for a clothing catalogue
| Catalogue need | Chatbot, in general | Vastralook |
|---|---|---|
| Your exact garment | Works from a prompt or an uploaded photo; the result may change details such as the border, buttons or print | Starts from your garment photo; you check the result against it |
| Same model across SKUs | Each chat starts fresh; keeping a face and build the same is up to you | Pick a model once and reuse it across a batch |
| Saree pallu and pleats | You describe where the pallu goes; there are no cloth controls | Drape Studio: mark the cut, pallu line and repeat lines |
| Resolution and sizes | Whatever the chatbot returns; you resize and crop | Choose 1K, 2K or 4K at generation |
| Repeating a shoot next month | Re-prompt and hope | Rerun the same garment, model and style |
| Cost per image | Plan-based; image limits not published as numbers on Gemini's page | About ₹20–₹25 at 1K, ₹40–₹50 at 2K when you generate yourself |
3. What the chatbots cost
On Google's own Gemini page, read 15 October 2026, the plans in India are Free at ₹0, Google AI Plus at ₹399 a month, Google AI Pro at ₹1,950 a month and Google AI Ultra from ₹6,500 a month. Image generation and editing is listed on the Free plan. The page gives no numeric image limits, only usage multipliers over the free plan, so we cannot work out a price per image. We could not read ChatGPT's pricing page (the request was refused), so we quote no ChatGPT prices; check OpenAI's page.
For comparison, Vastralook charges credits per image: about ₹20–₹25 at 1K or ₹40–₹50 at 2K if you generate yourself, and about ₹10–₹13 for a Create order at 2K, usually ready in 3–4 minutes. A 4K image costs 2 times a 1K image when you generate yourself. A chatbot subscription is cheaper if you make a handful of pictures. It costs more in your time if you make a catalogue.
4. The saree problem
Sarees show the difference most. A saree is six yards of cloth, and the pallu design must end up on the shoulder and back, the border must run down the pleats, and the pattern repeat must not stretch. With a prompt, you can ask for these; you cannot point at where the pallu starts. In Drape Studio you do exactly that: place the cut on the photo, draw the pallu line and say which end of the photo holds the pallu. Our guide on the pallu line walks through it.
5. A fair test you can run in 15 minutes
- Pick one real garment
Use a photo of your actual product, laid flat or hung, straight on, in daylight.
- Run it through the chatbot
Upload the photo and ask for it on a model. Save the result.
- Run it through Vastralook
Use the free credits (up to 4 free 2K images). Save the result.
- Compare on four things
The border or print against your real garment, the colour, whether the second image of the same model looks like the first, and whether the file fits your marketplace size.
Can I use ChatGPT for product photography?
You can make product-style images with it, and for a concept or a single post it can be enough. For a catalogue where the garment must match yours and the model must repeat, a dedicated tool gives you more control.
Can Gemini put my saree on a model?
It can generate an image from a prompt or a photo. It has no cut or pallu controls, so you cannot mark where the pallu starts. Test it with your own saree to see what it does with the border and pallu.
How much does Gemini cost in India?
Google's page, read 15 October 2026, lists Free at ₹0, Google AI Plus at ₹399 a month, Google AI Pro at ₹1,950 a month and Ultra from ₹6,500 a month. Prices change, so check the page.
Is Vastralook just a wrapper around a chatbot?
No. It is a studio with its own workflow: upload a garment, choose a model and style, set the cut on sarees, choose the output size and place an order. We do not describe the models behind it, and you do not need to know them to use it.
Is ChatGPT or Gemini cheaper than a fashion photo studio?
For a few images, a chatbot plan can be cheaper. For a full catalogue, compare the cost of your time re-prompting and fixing against a per-image price. Gemini has a free tier; ChatGPT prices were not read.
