Product image SEO for fashion comes down to five things Google documents: short descriptive filenames, informative alt text without keyword stuffing, supported formats at high resolution, an image sitemap, and image markup in Product structured data. Do those, avoid lazy-loading your hero image, and your clothing photos are easy to find and understand.
This applies to your own store, where you control the HTML. On a marketplace such as Meesho or Amazon you cannot edit alt text or filenames the same way, and the listing text matters more than the file. The guidance below follows Google's documentation, which we read on 15 October 2026.
Product image SEO: filenames
Google's guidance is to use short, descriptive filenames, and gives the pattern of a name that says what the picture is, rather than a camera default such as IMG00023.JPG. Avoid generic names such as image1.jpg. It also says to translate filenames when you localise images.
| Avoid | Use |
|---|---|
| IMG_4821.JPG | green-cotton-kurti-front.jpg |
| image1.jpg | red-banarasi-saree-pallu-detail.jpg |
| final_final_v3.png | navy-linen-shirt-back.jpg |
Product image SEO: alt text for clothing
Google calls alt text the most important attribute for image metadata and asks for information-rich, contextual descriptions without keyword stuffing. Its own example moves from missing alt text, to a bare word, to a full description. For a garment, say what is visible: colour, fabric, garment type, and the view.
| Weak | Better |
|---|---|
| (empty) | Green cotton kurti, front view, worn by a model |
| kurti kurti buy kurti online cheap | Green cotton kurti with block print, close-up of the neckline |
Sizes, formats and responsive images
- Google lists these formats as supported in the src attribute: BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG and AVIF. Keep the file extension matching the real file type.
- Use a high resolution where possible, and avoid extreme aspect ratios for your preferred images.
- Use the picture element or srcset to serve different sizes to different screens, and always include an img element with a src as the fallback.
- Data URIs reduce requests but can noticeably increase page size, so use them with care.
For clothing, resolution also has a direct customer effect: shoppers zoom to see fabric. A larger file lets zoom show weave and embroidery. Generating at a higher quality on Vastralook costs more credits per image, so decide which hero shots deserve it.
Image sitemaps
Google says image sitemaps help it discover images it might otherwise miss. They can list image URLs on other domains, which suits CDN hosting. If your images come from a CDN, Google suggests verifying that domain in Search Console so you receive crawl error reports.
Structured data
Google says structured data can make images eligible for rich results and a badge in Google Images, and that the image property is required for eligibility in the types where it applies. For product pages that means including the image in your Product markup and following Google's general structured data guidelines. Check the current Product documentation for exact image requirements, which we have not reproduced here.
- Every product image has a descriptive, human-readable filename.
- Every image has alt text that describes it, with no keyword lists.
- Formats are supported and extensions match the file type.
- Large hero images are not lazy-loaded; gallery images below the fold are.
- Images appear in your sitemap, and in Product structured data.
- Customers can zoom without the image turning soft.
Does the image filename affect ranking?
Google recommends descriptive filenames and treats them as useful context about the picture. We cannot measure how much weight they carry for your pages.
How long should alt text be?
Google does not give a length. It asks for information-rich, contextual text and warns against stuffing keywords, so describe the image the way you would to someone who cannot see it.
Should I use WebP or JPEG?
Both are on Google's supported list, along with AVIF and PNG. Choose by file size and your platform's support, and keep the extension matching the file.
What is product image SEO?
It is making product pictures easy for search engines and shoppers to find and understand: descriptive filenames, useful alt text, supported formats and sizes, sitemaps and structured data.
Do I need an image sitemap?
Google says image sitemaps help it discover images it might otherwise miss, and they can include images hosted on other domains such as a CDN.
Should the hero image be lazy-loaded?
No. web.dev advises never lazy-loading the Largest Contentful Paint image. Lazy-load gallery images below the fold instead.
Can I edit alt text on Meesho or Amazon?
Generally you upload images and listing text through the seller panel, not raw HTML. Check what your panel allows.
