Ecommerce banner size has no single standard. Shopify's own help page says the best dimensions depend on your theme and theme version, and names no banner size. Use the size hint in your theme's section, crop to the shape of that section, and keep the garment away from the edges.
What Shopify documents about banner size
| Question | What Shopify's help page states |
|---|---|
| Recommended banner width and height | Not published; depends on theme and theme version |
| Recommended aspect ratio | Not named; crop close to the shape of the section's image area |
| Cropping on different screens | Wide images may be cropped on tall screens; tall images on wide screens; focal points can keep key content in frame |
| Maximum upload | Up to 5000 × 5000 px or 25 megapixels suggested; 20 megapixels also stated |
How to find your banner size
- 1. Open your theme editor
Select the slideshow, image banner or hero section you want to fill.
- 2. Read the hint
Many themes show the recommended shape beside the image picker. If yours does not, check the theme's documentation.
- 3. Test on a duplicate
Upload the image to a duplicate theme and view desktop and mobile. Wide sections often crop differently on a phone.
- 4. Set the focal point
Use the focal point control where your theme offers it, so the garment stays in view when the crop changes.
Making a wide banner from a model photo
A fashion shot is usually portrait. Our 3:4 output at 2K is about 1792 × 2400 px. Cropping that to a 16:9 band leaves about 1792 × 1008 px, which is a thin slice of the garment. So decide the banner first.
- For a full-width banner, choose a style that shows a three-quarter or half-length pose, so the band keeps the garment rather than just the torso.
- Put the model to one side and leave plain space on the other for a headline. Add the text in your theme, not in the image, so it stays readable and editable.
- Keep the garment away from the edges. Mobile crops trim the sides first.
- Keep file weight down. A large hero slows the page, so export at the size the section needs, not the biggest you have.
Pricing for the shots: about ₹40–₹50 per 2K image generated directly, or about ₹10–₹13 per 2K shot on a Create order, ready in about 3–4 minutes.
- The size hint in your theme read before you make the image.
- Image cropped to the shape of that section.
- Garment centred, away from the edges, with room for a headline.
- Headline and button as theme text, not in the picture.
- Checked on desktop and mobile in a duplicate theme.
- File exported at the needed size, not the largest available.
What is the best banner size for a Shopify store?
Shopify's help page names none: it says the best dimensions depend on your theme and theme version. Use the hint in your theme editor.
What aspect ratio should a hero banner be?
Shopify advises cropping to a ratio close to the shape of the section's image area. It does not name a ratio.
How big can a Shopify theme image be?
Shopify's page suggests up to 5000 × 5000 px or 25 megapixels, and elsewhere states a 20 megapixel limit. The page does not resolve the two, so stay well under both.
Why does my banner look cropped on mobile?
Shopify says wide images may be cropped on tall screens. Keep the garment central and set a focal point if your theme has one.
Should I put text on the banner image?
Put it in the theme's text fields instead. Text inside the picture shrinks on a phone and cannot be edited without making a new image.
