Instagram carousel size: Instagram's help pages say photos keep their resolution when the width is 320 to 1080 px and the ratio sits between 1.91:1 and 4:5, and one orientation applies to every slide. Export 4:5 at 1080 px wide, which is 1080 × 1350 px, and keep every slide the same shape.
Instagram carousel size: what the help pages say
| Item | What Instagram's pages say | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Width | A photo 320 to 1080 px wide keeps its original resolution; upload at least 1080 px wide for best quality | Official, from extract |
| Ratio range | 1.91:1 to 4:5 on the posting page; 1.91:1 to 3:4 on the resolution page | Official, the two pages differ |
| Unsupported ratio | Cropped to a supported ratio | Official, from extract |
| Orientation | One choice for all slides: square, portrait or landscape | Official, from extract |
| Slide cap | Up to 10 on one page; up to 20 on another | Official, the two pages differ |
| File size and format | Not published on the pages we read | Not published |
What this means for a clothing carousel
- Pick 4:5. It is inside the range on both pages (4:5 is narrower than the 3:4 limit) and it is the tallest the posting page allows, so it shows the most garment.
- At 1080 px wide a 4:5 slide is 1080 × 1350 px, which is what the posting page's own arithmetic gives for its upper limit.
- Keep all slides the same shape. Instagram applies one orientation to the whole post, so a mix of square and portrait gets cropped.
- Put the garment and its hem inside the frame with a margin, because a crop trims the edges.
Cropping a 3:4 product shot for Instagram
Our 3:4 output at 2K is about 1792 × 2400 px. Cropping to 4:5 at the same width gives 1792 × 2240 px, which is well above 1080 wide. A 1:1 crop gives 1792 × 1792 px. Either is a trim of the height, so choose the crop that keeps the hem and the neckline. If you would rather not crop, one 3:4 slide falls in the range on the resolution page's wording but outside the posting page's, so 4:5 is the safer export.
A carousel plan for a fashion product
- Slide 1: the full garment on a model. This is the hook.
- Slide 2: the back view.
- Slide 3: a fabric or embroidery close-up from your own photo.
- Slide 4: a detail such as the neckline, border or sleeve.
- Slide 5: colours, sizes or set contents.
Pricing for the shots: about ₹40–₹50 per 2K image generated directly, or about ₹10–₹13 per 2K shot on a Create order, ready in about 3–4 minutes.
What is the best size for an Instagram carousel post?
Instagram's help pages put the supported range at 1.91:1 to 4:5 and say to upload at least 1080 px wide. A 4:5 slide at 1080 × 1350 px is the tallest option on the posting page.
Do all carousel slides need the same size?
Instagram says one orientation, square, portrait or landscape, applies to all slides in a post, so keep every slide the same shape to avoid unexpected crops.
How many photos can I put in an Instagram carousel?
Instagram's pages disagree: one says up to 10, another up to 20. Check the app, and plan around five to seven slides.
Is 3:4 a valid ratio for Instagram?
One Instagram page gives 3:4 as the portrait limit, while another gives 4:5. Export 4:5 to be inside both.
What file size does Instagram allow for photos?
Not published on the help pages we could read. Keep files at the size your editor exports at high quality and test an upload.
