Saree draping styles are the regional ways the same cloth is worn, such as Nivi, seedha pallu, Bengali and Nauvari. Drape Studio does not have a named-style picker. It drapes your saree on one of 14 traced poses, so for a regional drape you should check the Styles tab first.
The main saree draping styles
These are the styles most Indian buyers will recognise. The descriptions are short on purpose: the same style can vary by community and family, and a local tailor or customer will know the details better than any list.
| Style | Where it is associated | What marks it out |
|---|---|---|
| Nivi | Deccan region; the most common style today | Pleats at the front and the pallu over the left shoulder |
| Seedha pallu (Gujarati, Rajasthani, also Bihar and Uttar Pradesh) | Gujarat, Rajasthan and parts of the north | Like Nivi, but the pallu comes across the right shoulder and is held at the back, so it falls in front |
| Bengali and Odia | Bengal, Odisha | A single box pleat and a long loose end over the left shoulder that can cover the head |
| Nauvari or Kasta | Maharashtra, Goa | A nine-yard drape with the pleats passed between the legs and tucked at the back, for free movement |
| Kodava | Kodagu, Karnataka | Pleats at the back and the loose end brought back to front over the right shoulder |
| Madisar | Tamil Nadu | A nine-yard drape traditionally worn by Iyengar and Iyer women |
| Mundum Neriyathum | Kerala | A two-piece set, usually off-white with a gold or coloured border |
Which saree draping styles suit a catalogue
A catalogue has one job: show the pleats, the border and the pallu design clearly. Nivi does that best from the front, which is why it is the usual default for marketplace pictures. Regional drapes matter when your buyers are in that region or the saree is made for an occasion that calls for it, such as a Nauvari for a Maharashtrian wedding or a Mundum Neriyathum for Onam.
- Marketplace listing: a clear front view of the pallu, pleats and border usually matters most.
- Regional or occasion saree: show the drape that buyer expects, and name it in the title.
- Wedding collection: add a back or side view so the pallu fall is visible.
What Drape Studio does with saree draping styles today
Drape Studio puts your saree fabric on a model using one of 14 traced drape poses, which cover front, side, back and seated views. There is no setting that says Nivi, Bengali or Nauvari. What you control is the cloth itself: you mark the cut, the pallu line and the repeat, so the pallu design lands at the pallu and not on the pleats.
- 1. Upload the saree and set the cut
Upload the saree with pallu fabric, place the four corner pins or trace the cloth with Lasso, and press Use this cut.
- 2. Mark the pallu
Use the Pallu line tool to show which end is the pallu. Without it the pallu design can land on the pleats.
- 3. Pick the poses in Styles
Open the Styles tab and tick the poses you want. The number you tick is the number of shots you get, and each card shows your saree on that pose.
- 4. Check the drape, then order
Look at the drape on the stage. The final photo drapes naturally, so the exact pleat count can differ from the preview.
What are the main saree draping styles?
Nivi, seedha pallu (Gujarati and Rajasthani), Bengali and Odia, Nauvari or Kasta, Kodava, Madisar and Mundum Neriyathum are the best known. There are more regional styles beyond these.
What is the difference between Nivi and seedha pallu?
Both have front pleats. In Nivi the pallu goes over the left shoulder; in seedha pallu it is brought across the right shoulder and held at the back, so it falls in front.
Can Drape Studio make a Nauvari or Bengali drape?
Not by name. Drape Studio offers 14 traced drape poses and you choose from those in the Styles tab. Check them against the drape you need before you order.
Which saree draping style is best for a marketplace listing?
A clear front view that shows the pleats, border and pallu is the practical default, and Nivi is the most common style for it. Follow the marketplace's own picture rules.
Can I show my saree without any drape?
Yes. Drape Studio has a Flat Lay option that shows the saree laid out with no person.
How many saree draping styles are there?
There is no single agreed count. Wikipedia lists the main regional styles and mentions several more, and families often have their own variations.
