Amazon India lifestyle images do not go in the main slot for clothing, but Amazon staff say they are valuable as additional images, showing the product in use or in context. Keep them clean, true to the garment and free of text, then check your category's rules in Seller Central.
Amazon India lifestyle images vs the main image
| Main image | Lifestyle / additional images | |
|---|---|---|
| Lifestyle allowed? | Generally no; limited product types are exempt, not clothing | Yes, per Amazon staff: in use or in context |
| What it is for | A clear, unambiguous view of the product | Features, benefits and how it looks in use |
| Count | One per listing | No required number found; up to 6 alternates displayed per a staff reply |
| Size (Amazon.sg clothing guide) | 1,600 px or larger, either side | Same guide: 1,600 px or larger |
| Detailed rules | See the Amazon fashion guide | Few; mostly the shared bans below |
What Amazon staff say about lifestyle and additional images
- Lifestyle images aren't permitted as the main image for most products, so customers get a clear, unambiguous view of what they are considering.
- As additional images they can be valuable, showing the product in use or in context to help customers understand its features and benefits.
- Additional images should show off the product's best features. The post gives no number or limit for how many to upload.
- Staff on a separate thread say you can upload 8 alternate images but only 6 are displayed on the detail page. The post says “2 years ago”, so the limit may have changed; check the Manage Images page.
What the clothing style guide adds for the other slots
Amazon's Clothing and Accessories style guide summary was issued for Amazon.sg in March 2022. Amazon.in may differ, so use it as Amazon's own idea of good practice, not as the India rule. Its list of don'ts is headed for main and alternate images, and includes:
- Alternate images must be 1,600 pixels or larger in either height or width, with the colour matching the product for sale.
- True images only: no sketches, drawings or graphical representations.
- No borders, logos, watermarks, text, colour blocks, inset images or other graphics.
- No multiple product views or multiple colourways or sizes in one image, unless the product is sold as a multi-pack.
- No visible mannequin, hanger or holder, and no folded products.
- Not shown as a selfie, in black and white only, or with the model lying down or kneeling.
- No packaging, certificates, tags or brochures, and no distracting accessories such as big earrings, bags or sunglasses.
- Childrenswear must not be shown on a child model.
- Blurry, pixelated or jagged images, and images under 1,600 pixels, are listed as don'ts.
The same guide recommends using the last alternate image for a size mapping chart, with label size, body measurements and the model's measurements and size, to cut returns from poor fit. It is the one text-bearing image the guide itself recommends in the alternate slots. Amazon's 2017 India seller blog says the rest of the images should cover all the other angles of the product and should show only what the customer will receive.
A plan for the image slots
Amazon states no required count in what we read, so this is our suggestion, not a rule. It keeps within every ban above:
| Slot | Shows | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (main) | Front, pure white, on a model | See the Amazon fashion guide |
| 2 | Back view | The 2017 Amazon India blog asks for other angles |
| 3 | Fabric, print or embroidery close-up | Detail a buyer cannot judge from a full-length shot |
| 4 | On-model lifestyle: the garment in a real setting | Amazon staff: in use or in context |
| 5 | Second full-length pose or three-quarter | Shows the fall and fit from another side |
| 6 | Size chart with the model's measurements | The style guide's suggestion for the last alternate |
Keeping a lifestyle shot honest
- The colour and print are exactly what is delivered: the colour in the image must match the product for sale.
- Only the garment for sale is styled to stand out. No bag, big earrings or sunglasses pulling the eye.
- A real setting, not a collage, an inset, a border or a coloured block.
- No text, logo or watermark on the photo, and no Amazon badge or brand mark.
- No pose that is lying down or kneeling, and no selfie framing.
- The setting does not hide the hem, pallu or the part that makes the sale.
- At least 1,600 px on the long side, which clears every Amazon figure we read.
Making the lifestyle slot with Vastralook
Drape Studio's Amazon preset sets a Pure White Studio for all 5 poses, which suits the main image and the back view. It is a starting point you can change: for a setting-based lifestyle shot, pick a different background after choosing the preset. The preset is for sarees and lehengas only. Every other garment goes through Catalogue Studio, where each style sets a pose, framing and setting; use View to judge the setting before you pick it. At 3:4 a 2K shot is about 1792 × 2400 px, which clears 1,600 px on the long side. A 1K shot, about 896 × 1200 px, is under it.
Six slots for one garment is one main shot plus alternates; with one model it is six shots, since a batch is garments × models × styles. At about ₹10–₹13 per 2K shot on a Create order, six shots come to about ₹60–₹75 across our credit packs, each ready in about 3–4 minutes. Direct generation is about ₹40–₹50 per 2K image. Use your own photo for the fabric close-up.
Can I use a lifestyle image as my Amazon main image for clothing?
Not generally. An Amazon staff reply on the Amazon.in forum says lifestyle images are generally not allowed as the main image, with exceptions for a short list of home products such as beds, rugs and sofas. Clothing is not on it.
Are lifestyle images allowed in the other Amazon image slots?
Yes, according to Amazon staff, who describe them as valuable additional images that show the product in use or in context. Keep them free of text and graphics for clothing.
How many images should an Amazon India clothing listing have?
We found no required number. Staff say the detail page shows the main image plus up to six alternates, in a forum reply that may be out of date. Check the Manage Images page in Seller Central.
What size should secondary images be on Amazon.in?
Amazon's Clothing style guide summary, issued for Amazon.sg, says 1,600 pixels or larger in either height or width. A staff post on Amazon.in gives 500 to 10,000 px with at least 1,000 px for zoom. Shooting at 2,000 px clears both.
Can I put text or an infographic on a clothing image?
A staff post suggests infographics for additional images, while the clothing style guide bans text and graphics. For clothing, keep photos clean, and put a size chart in the last slot as the style guide suggests.
Can a lifestyle image show a mannequin or hanger on Amazon?
The Amazon.sg clothing style guide lists a visible mannequin, hanger or holder, and folded products, among its don'ts for main and alternate images.
