Etsy fashion photos should be at least 2000 pixels on width and height, with the first photo at least 635 pixels, according to Etsy's own help page. Instagram Shop photos follow Meta's catalogue rules: JPEG or PNG, at least 500 × 500 pixels, up to 8 MB. Both were read on 15 October 2026.
Etsy and Instagram Shop are the two places where a fashion photo is judged at thumbnail size first. The same image has to look good as a small square in a grid and as a large picture once someone taps it. This post separates what each platform says in its own help pages from what sellers report, then shows how to produce one set of AI fashion photos that serves both.
Etsy fashion photo size: what Etsy says, and what sellers add
| Item | Etsy's own help pages | Seller-reported or older |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended size | At least 2000 pixels on width and height | Some guides say 2000 px on the shortest side at 72 ppi; older forum posts say 1000 px |
| First photo | A lower bar of at least 635 pixels, below which Etsy says the listing may rank lower in search | Several guides repeat this; none add a second official figure |
| Search placement | The Search Visibility page lists 2000 px or more for the primary photo as part of priority placement | Not applicable |
| Aspect ratio | Etsy says photos should work for several crops, such as square and rectangle | Community posts mention 5:4; other guides say 4:3 or 1:1. Etsy's text we read did not give one required ratio |
| File limits | Not quoted in the text we read | Many guides say 1 MB, JPG, PNG or GIF. We could not tie this to an Etsy page |
The practical reading is that Etsy wants large files and a picture that survives being cropped. It does not publish one fixed ratio in the text we read, so your safe choice is a photo with a clear margin around the garment, so that a square crop and a wider crop both keep it whole.
Instagram Shop product photo size: Meta's rules, and the gap
An Instagram Shop is fed from a Meta catalogue, so the image rules that apply are Meta's catalogue image specifications. Meta also keeps a separate page on what a catalogue must meet to be used for Shops, which you should read once. We did not find one Instagram-only pixel rule for a shop product photo, so we do not state one.
| Item | Meta's own help page |
|---|---|
| Format | JPEG or PNG |
| Minimum size | 500 × 500 pixels |
| Maximum file | 8 MB |
| Square display (carousel, collection, Shops) | Shown as 1:1; Meta recommends 1024 × 1024 for best quality |
| Single-image ads | Shown at 1.91:1; Meta recommends 1200 × 628 |
| Content | Match the exact product, show the whole product in the main image, no overlaid text, promo codes or watermarks; Meta suggests a white backdrop |
| Replacing an image | Use a different image URL; the same URL is not recognised as a change |
One set of Etsy and Instagram Shop fashion photos
- 1. Shoot the 3:4 portrait in 2K or 4K
A 2K shot at 3:4 measures about 1792 × 2400 pixels and a 4K shot about 3584 × 4800, from our finished shots. Either clears Etsy's 2000 px recommendation on the long side. For the short side, 4K is the only size that clears it at 3:4.
- 2. Crop a square from the same file
For Meta's 1:1 display and for an Etsy grid, crop a square around the garment. Check the hem, the pallu or the hands are not cut off.
- 3. Keep the background plain
Meta suggests a white backdrop. Etsy shoppers also see your photo next to hundreds of others, and a plain, bright background makes the colour easy to judge.
- 4. Add one close-up and one back view
Fabric and print detail answers the question a shopper cannot ask. Both platforms allow more than one image per product.
- 5. Compare with the real garment
Colour is the most common reason for a return. Hold the garment next to the screen before you publish.
Etsy and Instagram Shop fashion photos: the style buyers expect
- Etsy: buyers expect to see the garment is real and made by a person. Keep one honest flat or hanging photo alongside the on-model shot, and say in the listing that the model photo is AI-generated if that is how it was made.
- Instagram Shop: the grid is the shop window. Keep light, background and crop the same across a collection so the grid looks planned.
- Both: show the garment at the length and fit you actually sell. Do not let a pose hide a hem or a waistline.
How to get the images out of Vastralook
Vastralook has no Etsy or Instagram connection, and no feed export. Finished shots are downloaded from the Orders tab, one at a time or all together for an order, and you upload them to Etsy or Commerce Manager yourself. A Create order costs ₹8–₹10 per 1K shot, usually ready in 3–4 minutes, and a shot you generate yourself costs ₹20–₹25 at 1K; larger sizes cost more, shown on the order button before you pay.
What size should Etsy fashion photos be?
Etsy's own help page recommends listing photos of at least 2000 pixels on width and height, with a lower bar of 635 pixels for the first photo. It does not give one required ratio in the text we read, so keep a clear margin around the garment so it survives a square or wider crop.
What size should Instagram Shop product photos be?
Instagram Shop uses a Meta catalogue. Meta's catalogue page says JPEG or PNG, at least 500 × 500 pixels and at most 8 MB, shown square in carousels, collections and Shops, with 1024 × 1024 recommended. We found no separate Instagram-only pixel rule.
Does Vastralook connect to Etsy or Instagram?
No. You download the images and upload them yourself.
Can I use a portrait photo on Etsy?
Yes, you can upload it, but Etsy's grid and your first photo are cropped, so check how the crop treats the top and bottom of the garment. Many sellers lead with a square crop and keep the portrait for later photos; that is seller practice, not an Etsy rule.
What aspect ratio is best for Etsy fashion listings?
Etsy's text we read gave no single required ratio and said photos should work for several crops. Sellers report 4:3, 5:4 and 1:1. A safe approach is a photo with a clear margin around the garment, so a square or wider crop keeps it whole.
Can I use the same fashion photos on Etsy and Instagram Shop?
Yes, if they meet both sets of rules. Make a 3:4 portrait at 2K or 4K, then crop a square from it. Remove any text or watermark from the main image, because Meta says not to include them.
Do Etsy and Instagram Shop allow AI model photos?
We did not read either platform's AI policy for this post. Check Etsy's and Meta's current rules, and keep a real photo of the garment in the listing so buyers see the actual item.
